Working on the model: The legacy of the Swiss civil engineer Heinz Isler (1926-2009) as an architectural and cultural-historical document

Heinz Isler is one of the most internationally renowned Swiss engineers of the second half of the 20th century. His legacy, preserved at the gta Archive of the ETH Zurich, documents the work of an engineer who was extremely successful under specific economic conditions over a period of around three decades from the mid-1950s, particularly with thin-walled concrete shells, which he developed with the aid of experimental form-finding methods. The legacy is one of the most extensive holdings of the gta archive. Thanks to its wealth of material, it can provide insights - beyond the design process - into various cycles of construction between boom and oil crisis, into professional networks, and finally into the advertising for Isler's "products".
The Lunch Lecture will discuss research questions and approaches of the project "Experimental Design in the Post-War Period", currently being carried out at ETH Zurich and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), which is dedicated to Isler's work from an engineering and cultural historical perspective.
